U-10s trip to Arklow - May 2007

The happy travelling squads

Cabinteely was recently invited to send two U-10 squads to visit Arklow Town FC for the first annual Arklow Building Supplies May bank holiday 9-a-side tournament. As we have always maintainted good relations with Arklow Town, we were only too delighted to take up the offer. Apart from the great welcome and hospitality always provided, one of the attractions is the opportunity to play on Arklow's Lamberton international pitch - a great surface to play on!

The six-club tournament was organised partly to help the lads with the step up to the 11-a-side format. The other clubs involved were Arklow Town, Shamrock Rovers (Wexford), Tolka Rovers, Kildare County Team and Gorey FC. Two Cabinteely U-10 teams took up the invitation and travelled to Arklow - Dave Mooney’s/Eric Fisher's DDSL U-10A1 and Aidan Forsyth's/Jim Allen’s DDSL U-10B1.

The tense atmosphere at the penalty shoot-out!

Each team played all others in a round-robin league format in order to decide the winners. The Cabo v Cabo game was a tight 'derby' affair and only one goal separated them in the end, with Dave’s team eventually winning the honours!

Gorey FC ultimately won the event and it took a penalty shoot-out to decide the runners-up spot between Dave’s Cabo team and Tolka Rovers. The decision to take part in a penalty shoot-out was taken jointly by the two runner-up team managers as the option of playing a 10 minute-a-side play-off was declined due to player and manager exhaustion!! Unfortunately, Cabo lost 7-6 with both the penalty takers and goalies doing an excellent job.

Our sincere thanks to Arklow Town for organising a fabulous day's football and for providing food and refreshments for both players and supporters alike.

To all next year’s U-10s managers - don’t forget to put this event in your diaries early and hope that Arklow Town invite Cabinteely FC to participate yet again next year!
